Every summer, ECI welcomes a new group of students eager to step beyond the classroom and experience commercial construction firsthand. Our Construction Internship Program is designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience alongside project managers, superintendents, and industry professionals on active job sites throughout Central Texas.

We believe the best learning happens through experience. Interns don't spend their summer observing from the sidelines. They become part of the team, contributing to real projects while building technical knowledge, confidence, and lasting professional relationships. It's an investment in the next generation of construction professionals and an opportunity for students to discover what a career in commercial construction truly looks like.

An internship with Engen Contracting Inc. (ECI) is about much more than checking a box or completing a summer job. From day one, our interns are immersed in the day-to-day operations of active commercial construction projects, gaining exposure to every stage of the building process. They're participating in project meetings, coordinating with subcontractors, assisting with RFIs, documenting daily progress, attending safety walks, and learning how schedules come together. By experiencing both the field and the office, students gain a well-rounded understanding of what it takes to guide a commercial construction project through every stage.

One of the greatest advantages of ECI's construction internship program is the opportunity to experience a variety of project types and construction activities. Throughout the summer, interns gain firsthand insight into the collaboration required between owners, architects, consultants, subcontractors, and project teams to move a project from concept to completion. Seeing a project evolve from early site work and utilities to vertical construction and interior finishes provides a valuable perspective that simply can't be replicated in a classroom.

Technical experience is only part of what makes an internship meaningful.

At ECI, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. We strive to create an environment where questions are encouraged, learning is continuous, and every team member feels supported. Our interns become part of the team from their very first day, gaining mentors who are invested in both their professional development and personal growth.

That culture of collaboration is one of the reasons many students leave ECI with not only new skills, but lasting relationships and a clearer vision for their future careers.

Dillon Clark first connected with ECI at the Texas State University Career Fair, where she met team members and learned more about the company's approach to commercial construction. While speaking with several contractors, one thing immediately stood out about ECI.

"What initially stood out to me was that Engen had a more personal, close-knit feel compared to some of the larger general contractors I spoke with," Dillon shared. "I felt like I would have the opportunity to build relationships with the team, ask questions, and gain meaningful hands-on experience rather than simply feeling like another intern."

That hands-on experience has become one of the defining parts of her summer. Because no two days on a commercial construction project are the same, Dillon has gained exposure to both field operations and project management responsibilities. Whether she's walking the jobsite, coordinating with subcontractors, reviewing drawings and submittals, assisting with RFIs, updating inspection and daily logs, or participating in project meetings, each day has provided new opportunities to learn and grow.

For Dillon, one of the most rewarding aspects of the internship has been watching a project progress from the earliest stages of construction into a vertical structure.

"It's been exciting to watch the site develop from underground utilities and foundations to the structural steel phase," she said. "Being able to connect what I've learned in the classroom with real-world experience has helped me grow both technically and professionally."

Beyond the technical experience, Dillon says the people at ECI have made the biggest impact.

"This internship has given me far more than just technical experience. It has helped me build confidence in communicating with subcontractors, asking questions, understanding the relationship between the plans and what's being built, and solving problems alongside the project team," she shared. "The Scenic Brook team has been incredibly patient with teaching us—from simple things like formatting a professional email to more complex tasks like drafting RFIs and identifying issues in the drawings. This internship has reinforced that commercial construction is the career path I want to pursue after graduation."

Lauren Guerra-Flores first connected with ECI while attending the University of Texas Architecture Career Fair. After meeting Drew and Nick, she quickly recognized something that stood out beyond the projects.

"I loved how welcoming they both were," Lauren shared. "From that conversation, I became excited about the learning environment that ECI creates. I wanted to work somewhere that was rooting for me and would help me overcome challenges along the way."

This summer, Lauren has experienced that supportive culture firsthand while working alongside the project team in the field. Her days include coordinating with subcontractors, reviewing project schedules with the superintendent, and assisting project managers with RFIs and vendor communication to help keep projects moving forward.

For Lauren, the people have made the biggest impact. "The most rewarding part of my internship has been learning from everybody at ECI. In every scenario, I've felt comfortable asking for clarification, supported while learning new skills, and encouraged to stay curious. ECI does an awesome job of teaching us how to show up better as people and as coworkers."

As she reflects on her summer, Lauren is especially grateful for the welcoming environment she found at ECI. "From day one, everybody took us in and made it clear they were there to help us with anything. This is a great place to find community and learn a lot."

While many architecture students spend their summers in design studios, Danya Selber intentionally chose a different path. After earning her bachelor's degree in Urban Studies from Trinity University with minors in Studio Art, Architectural Studies, and Communication, Danya is now pursuing her Master of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. Rather than seeking a traditional architecture internship, she wanted to gain hands-on construction experience.

"I wanted to spend my first summer outside the classroom gaining experience I couldn't get in studio—hands-on construction work."

After meeting the ECI team at UT's Architecture Career Fair, she immediately noticed the company's culture.

"What stood out most to me was the culture I witnessed among the staff. The relationships and interactions between the team reflected a workplace built on trust and respect. In an industry where communication and teamwork are essential to a project's success, that environment really impressed me."

Throughout her internship, Danya has been immersed in the daily responsibilities of a commercial construction project. From completing daily safety documentation and conducting jobsite safety walks to attending Owner-Architect-Contractor meetings, documenting project progress, assisting with RFIs, reviewing drawings, and learning directly from subcontractors in the field, each day has expanded her understanding of the construction process. One of the most rewarding parts of the experience has been watching a project come to life.

"I've been able to watch a project grow from a singular slab on a sloped site into a three-building steel frame plaza. I've witnessed the conversations between subcontractors, project teams, owners, and architects. I've seen the planning, organization, and problem-solving that it takes to keep a project moving."

Danya believes this experience will shape the way she approaches architecture throughout her career.

"Being present during the construction phase, the stage that follows so long after the original design, is what will allow me to see a project from start to finish before my pencil even hits the drafting table."

Ryan Oyer discovered ECI through a personal connection. His mother had previously worked with ECI President Chris Engen, and hearing about Chris's leadership and professionalism sparked Ryan's interest in the company.

"What really stood out to me was Chris's character and level of professionalism. I wanted to work at a company with a strong founding team, and ECI is exactly that."

As a Construction Science & Management student at UTSA, Ryan has spent the summer gaining practical experience in the field while supporting the project team with daily operations. His responsibilities include conducting safety walks, maintaining daily logs, assisting with installation inspections, coordinating with subcontractors, and helping to ensure job sites remain organized and run efficiently.

For Ryan, one of the most valuable aspects of the internship has been the relationships he's built throughout the construction process.

"The most rewarding part has definitely been building relationships with various tradesmen and learning more about what they do."

Those conversations have given him a deeper appreciation for the expertise each trade brings to a project and reinforced the importance of teamwork in commercial construction.
